The CGIAR Initiative on One Health emphasizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, particularly in relation to water. Water quality is influenced by various factors, including urban areas, agriculture, livestock, and industries, and issues like water scarcity, pollution, and inadequate management have significant impacts on health and ecosystems. The initiative, involving research institutions and partners, seeks to mitigate zoonotic diseases, enhance food and water safety, and reduce antimicrobial resistance by addressing water-related challenges.

Specifically, the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) is working on water issues in livestock production value chains, focusing on microbial contamination, waste management, and improper water use. They are conducting research in the Akaki watershed in Ethiopia and the Song watershed in India to inform national One Health planning processes and promote evidence-based policies for water quality improvement. The goal is to create a healthier and more sustainable future through integrated One Health approaches.
